1817年6月5日,第一艘大湖蒸汽船“Frontenac”号下水,船身切开安大略湖的碧波,也拉开了一个以蒸汽为动力的航运纪元。从此,五大湖不再只靠风帆与桨橹,内陆水路变得更快捷、更可靠,沿湖城市得以前所未有地紧密相连。今天回望,这一次下水正是现代湖运与工业进步交汇的起点。
